Today was observation day again at the kidlet's preschool, twenty minutes for us parents to watch and see what our kids are up to behind those ominous green doors.
First she showed me her favourite activity which involved a set of red and a set of blue cylinders that made different noises. The task was to find the matching cylinders from each set. Lots of shaking, lots of matching. Then the teacher suggested that the kidlet show me her long addition. Yes, the kidlet adds 4 digit numbers together using little tiles that come in units, tens, hundreds, and thousands.
I got to talk to the teacher quite a bit this time as she sat with us. The kidlet has been learning things quickly, the sponge she is, and as soon as she masters a task, she gets bored and wants to move on (hmmmm... sounds a little familiar). She even stumped the teachers one day with the word 'alliteration' (what, that's not a common word?? is it just me??), plus when they were talking about bats and how they 'see' where they're going, the kidlet piped up 'echolocation!'. At any rate, they get a kick out of her. Sure, she still has her meltdowns but they're much more rare (yay).
The teacher asked if I was going to keep the kidlet there for Kindergarten and I said I wasn't sure yet, but I did admit that I was afraid she'd be bored in a traditional class. The teacher agreed. Convenience-wise, it would be easier for us to send her to the elementary school for Kindergarten, as I already have her on the list for before & after school care so she'd be there the whole day. Education-wise, it's probably better for us to keep her where she is for K, keep her in her current daycare (which she's back to liking again - phew), then transition to the Montessori program offered at the elementary school for Grades 1-5 and use the before/after school care then.
Ah, decisions, decisions. Just to cover my bases, this afternoon I trucked the kidlet downtown here to 1) get her SIN which I've been procrastinating over for about 5 years now (only so we can finally set up an RESP, not so that we can ship her off to work) and 2) sign her up for the Montessori program with the School District, starting in 2010. The outing only took about an hour and a half in total and it was nice to get out for a bit. I've been pretty cooped up with yet another nasty cold (other than dragging my butt to work for my three days). It's so nice and easy taking her out now at this age - no stroller or having to bring things to keep her entertained - no worrying about much of anything. Cool.
On the work front, we finally hired someone today and she starts Monday. Crossing fingers that she settles in quickly, especially since I don't really have that much time to train her so she's just going to have to run with it. So two more weeks of work, then off for a few days, then Christmas (I'm about half done shopping - eep), then Hawaii! It's already proving to be a crazy busy month!
